Review

“Fascinating . . . The true subject of this unforgettable book is female bonding and the ties that even bars can’t unbind.”—People (four stars)   “I loved this book. It’s a story rich with humor, pathos, and redemption. What I did not expect from this memoir was the affection, compassion, and even reverence that Piper Kerman demonstrates for all the women she encountered while she was locked away in jail. I will never forget it.”—Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love   “This book is impossible to put down because [Kerman] could be you. Or your best friend. Or your daughter.”—Los Angeles Times   “Moving . . . transcends the memoir genre’s usual self-centeredness to explore how human beings can always surprise you.”—USA Today   “It’s a compelling awakening, and a harrowing one—both for the reader and for Kerman.”—Newsweek

I totally enjoyed the book and "her story." I took off one star because I thought the quality of the book printing could be better.

Like most people, I was first introduced to this story from the show on Netflix. While waiting for the new season to come out it prompted me to buy the book and see how similar it was to Hollywood's spin on things. The book is MUCH different than the show. And better. The book, while it is a memoir written by Piper, makes her out to be a much better person than the Piper on the TV show. Now, if you haven't read the book or seen the TV show and you have plans to, I suggest you stop reading because there are SPOILERS ahead....The real Piper, whose last name is Kerman and not Chapman, didn't seem as conniving or crazy as the TV show Piper. She didn't take part in a dirty panties operation, didn't do her time with Alex Voss (only a few short weeks when they were testifying in Chicago), and never got starved by the head kitchen worker. As an avid reader, I get it - the book is always different than when Hollywood takes over and makes dramatic effect on it.The book was very informative - it displayed women bonding in a situation that is less than desirable for most of the human population. While most women, when put together with other women in cramped up places usually proves as challenging and scary, Piper Kerman talked about the positives when it came to serving time together. She included many details that the show leaves out - it was nice to actually get in her head and feel the emotions of doing time.I'm giving it 4 stars because it took me a little longer to finish than other books. While not a bad book, there were parts where I had a hard time focusing because it felt repetitive and unnecessary. If you were into the TV show, check this out. While there are shades of similarities, the book is extremely different than what Netflix has shared with us.

Prison fascinates and horrifies me. My favorite TV show is Prison Break, so I thought I'd give Orange is the New Black show a try. While the TV show wasn't for me, I'm glad I read this memoir about an upper-middle-class woman who goes to prison for a year. I had the pleasure of meeting the author at a book reading/signing at a women's prison, and she is lovely in real life.Piper Kerman's real-life story chronicling her year in prison is insightful and thought-provoking.At times the writing impressed me, like this vivid description:"Miss Sanchez had long Frito-chip fingernails painted Barbie pink."There are interesting insights into prison life."Prison is quite literally a ghetto in the most classic sense of the word, a place where the US government not puts not only the dangerous but also the inconvenient--people who are mentally ill, people who are addicts, people who are poor and uneducated and unskilled. Meanwhile, the ghetto in the outside world is a prison as well, and a much more difficult one to escape from. In fact, there is basically a revolving door between our urban and rural ghettos and the formal ghetto of our prison system."My favorite "character" is the Russian wife of a mobster, Pop. Pop is the head cook, and gives invaluable advice to Piper. This story makes the reader inevitably wonder how she would handle imprisonment. I resonated with Piper helping an inmate write a paper. I also would try to fit exercise into my daily routine to stay sane. But really, it's hard to imagine how awful imprisonment would be.The groping from male guards infuriated me:"Other male COs were brazen, like the short, red-faced young bigmouth who asked me loudly and repeatedly, "Where are the weapons of mass destruction?" while he fondled me and I gritted my teeth. There was absolutely no payoff for filing a complaint. A female prisoner who alleges sexual misconduct on the part of a guard is invariably locked in the SHU in "protective custody", losing her housing assignment, program actives, work assignment, and a host of other prison privileges, not to mention the comfort of her routine and friends."I like how prison statistics (like one out of 100 adults are locked up in the US) are told factually without a preachy tone. I'm also glad Piper mentioned feeling remorse for trafficking drugs--the very drugs that may have been used by her fellow inmates as part of their crimes. I can get behind the decriminalization of drugs for personal use, but I disagree with the notion that drug dealers are never violent.Overall, a good read, and I'm impressed Piper is giving back by teaching writing to prisoners.

I very much enjoyed reading purely from Piper's perspective. The writing is vivid, she reserves judgment of most of those she's incarcerated with, and she gives the reader clear insight into how her prison experience changed her in so many ways for the rest of her life. I suppose I took away one star only because I've been such a fan of the series, which is so packed with action and filled with both nasty and lovable characters that I kept expecting the story to "light up" like the screen. On the other hand, I found that Piper and Larry's relationship was genuine, one which provided Piper some measure of stability the character lacks, unlike her on again, off again relationship with Alex in the series.

From Publishers Weekly
Veteran journalist and conspiracy theorist Marrs (Rule by Secrecy) ropes up Nazis and ancient secret societies for his uneven fiction debut, set amidst the machinations of WWII. When the team of archeologist Giselle Tchaikovsky discovers a mysterious crystal skull near Belize, they're double-crossed by a murderous German colleague. Giselle vows revenge, journeying to Europe where the skull has been turned over to Hitler. Once in France, however, Giselle becomes involved with Resistance members, including university scholars and early Cathar devotees, and eventually widens her quest for the skull to a campaign for peace. True to form, Giselle's quest propels her along a convoluted path through Europe and Russia, ultimately leading her to resurrect an ancient sisterhood dedicated to peace and the preservation of ancient, sacred artifacts. With one-dimensional characters, stilted dialogue and lengthy "instructional" passages, this novel moves laboriously toward a predictable Nazi-foiling finale.

From School Library Journal
Starred Review. Grade 6-9–The author of the popular All Alone in the Universe (HarperCollins, 1999) returns with another character study involving those moments that occur in everyone's life–moments when a decision is made that sends a person along one path instead of another. Debbie, who wishes that something would happen so she'll be a different person, and Hector, who feels he is unfinished, narrate most of the novel. Both are 14 years old. Hector is a fabulous character with a wry humor and an appealing sense of self-awareness. A secondary story involving Debbie's locket that goes missing in the beginning of the tale and is passed around by a number of characters emphasizes the theme of the book. The descriptive, measured writing includes poems, prose, haiku, and question-and-answer formats. There is a great deal of humor in this gentle story about a group of childhood friends facing the crossroads of life and how they wish to live it. Young teens will certainly relate to the self-consciousnesses and uncertainty of all of the characters, each of whom is straining toward clarity and awareness. The book is profusely illustrated with Perkins's amusing drawings and some photographs.–B. Allison Gray, John Jermain Library, Sag Harbor, NY

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Gr. 6-9. This lyrical sequel to All Alone in the Universe (1999), a Booklist Editor's Choice, begins with one of many black-and-white drawings and a caption that reads, "People move back and forth in this area like molecules in steam." As the title and caption imply, this story reads like a series of intersecting vignettes--all focused on 14-year-old Debbie and her friends as they leave childhood behind. Perkins writes with subtle, wry humor about perceptive moments that will speak directly to readers: universe-expanding crushes, which fill the world with "signs and wonder"; scornful reappraisals of childhood things (Debbie's disdain for Nancy Drew is particularly funny); urgent concerns about outfits, snappy retorts, and self-image. Perkins adds many experimental passages to her straightforward narrative, and she finds poetry in the common exchanges between teens. One section of dialogue, written entirely in haiku, reads, "Jeff White is handsome, / but his hair is so greasy. / If he would wash it--." A few cultural references set the book in the 1970s, but most readers will find their contemporaries in these characters. Best of all are the understated moments, often private and piercing in their authenticity, that capture intelligent, likable teens searching for signs of who they are, and who they'll become. Ghost: Confessions of a Counterterrorism AgentBy Fred Burton

In this hard-hitting memoir, Fred Burton, a key figure in international counterterrorism and domestic spycraft, emerges from the shadows to reveal who he is, what he has accomplished, and the threats that lurk unseen except by an experienced, worldly-wise few. Plunging readers into the murky world of violent religious extremism that spans the streets of Middle Eastern cities and the informant-filled alleys of American slums, Burton takes us behind the scenes to reveal how the United States tracked Libya-linked master terrorist Abu Nidal; captured Ramzi Yusef, architect of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing; and pursued the assassins of major figures including Yitzhak Rabin, Meir Kahane, and General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq, the president of Pakistan–classic cases that have sobering new meaning in the treacherous years since 9/11. Here, too, is Burton’s advice on personal safety for today’s most powerful CEOs, gleaned from his experience at Stratfor, the private firm Barron’s calls “the shadow CIA.”

Told in a no-holds-barred, gripping, nuanced style that illuminates a complex and driven man, Ghost is both a riveting read and an illuminating look into the shadows of the most important struggle of our time.

From Publishers Weekly
With spy thriller suspense and the clarity of a police report, former special agent Burton's State Department saga reads like a brewing-storm prequel to the current "war on terror." Working for the tiny, newly created counterterrorism division of the Diplomatic Security Service in the mid-1980s, Burton liaisons among the FBI, the CIA, and a network of covert informants "to find out the how" of terrorist attacks, and prevent repeat events. This snapshot of his career reveals "the foundations for the chaos we face today: a cold war between superpowers overlayed atop a growing struggle between the Christian world and radical Islam." Of obvious interest to anyone with an eye on world affairs, Burton's assets will draw in even casual counterterrorism fans: the spook can actually write. His first hook is a Dashiell Hammett-esque preface about his hand-written list of targeted terrorist masterminds, which he keeps on his person at all times and "as current as today's headlines." From there he takes readers through the crimes and captures of a few, along with the formation and administration of the first State Department unit of its kind. Most striking is the material's relevance twenty years later; Burton's clashes with Hezbollah in Beirut and prickly diplomacy with Iran could almost be pulled from present-day newspapers.

From Booklist
In the mid-1980s, Burton, a Maryland police officer, joined the Diplomatic Security Service, a little-known U.S. government agency, and was assigned to its even less-well-known counterterrorism branch. Far from the fictional CTU of television’s 24, Burton’s new office consisted of three men: the author, another new recruit, and the boss, a no-nonsense career man who had been trying to combat all the world’s terrorists single-handedly. Soon Burton was plunged into the world of Middle Eastern terrorism, and this memoir follows him as he works a number of cases, including the release of hostages from Beirut, which exploded into the Iran-Contra affair and appears to have affected the author in a deep and personal way. In many ways, this book reads like a le Carré spy novel: it’s not flashy, not filled with pyrotechnics, not full of chase scenes and derring-do. Rather, it’s the story of a working man whose job involved trying to prevent people from attacking his country. Shorn of ideological rights and wrongs, it’s a fascinating look at what counterterrorism really means on a day-to-day level. --David Pitt

Review
“Rife with anecdotes of assassinations, nuclear threats and double agents.”—Oklahoma Gazette

“Revealing . . . Burton was there, and you will be as well.”—Bobby R. Inman, former director of the National Security Agency

“The world of counterterrorism is like that old jigsaw puzzle in the back of the closet: Its many missing pieces and extra parts jumbled in from other puzzles make it almost impossible to assemble. But in Ghost, Fred Burton manages to join together enough pieces to give us a discerning look at that world. This is a story, told in human terms, that will help make sense of the great puzzle of our times.” —Eric L. Haney, author of Inside Delta Force and executive producer of The Unit

“Striking . . . With spy thriller suspense and the clarity of a police report, former special agent Burton’s State Department saga reads like a brewing-storm prequel to the current war on terror.”—Publishers Weekly

Byron takes us on a journey through the history of human technological and societal development, and asks a set of philosophical questions that help frame how to think about the age we're in now, centered on the concept of developing machines that think. Without trying to guide the reader to a particular conclusion, Byron asks you to contend with basic questions - such as what YOU are, fundamentally, and how that shapes your thinking about the age we're in.If you're an avid reader of futurist thinking or speculative fiction, you'll find a lot of familiar concepts here, but framed within the arc of history and with a focus on the implications for the human condition. If you're not, Byron helps guide you into the kind of thinking required to really evaluate the implications of AI. I'd recommend The Fourth Age to anyone interested in the future of humanity, it's deep enough to provoke new thoughts in the experienced thinker in this space, and approachable enough to be your first introduction. And at the risk of a minor spoiler - Byron concludes with a prediction for what comes after this age - and it's a prediction that is centered on a well-reasoned, but fundamentally very optimistic outlook on humanity - what we might look like with our potential fully realized on the other side of this Fourth Age. Whether or not you agree with his prediction - you'll definitely want to.

This is the best book in AI, robots, and their implications for the future that I have read in at least a decade, and certainly the most relevant for where we stand as a society today. The author's prose is exceptionally readable and creative. It incorporates a summary of ideas already in circulation (and thus is appropriate for someone without a background in AI), and also introduces original ideas that I have not seen anywhere else. I highly recommend this book.

It's nice to find a book on AI that straddles the line between being enjoyable and easy to follow without sacrificing any of the nuance and depth of this challenging topic. While we can probably agree that the exact future of AI has a lot of unknowns, and hence potential dangers, it doesn't change the fact that we can choose to view the possibilities through an optimistic lens, as Reese does here.Throughout the book, Reese takes apart the ominous headlines we so often hear in the news and provides more clarity around the topic. For example, the notion that '47% of jobs are at risk of being automated' is shown to be effectively a mis-reading of the reports authors, who more accurately concluded that roughly 47% of common tasks could be automated, but those tasks are spread out among many occupations.I do think more time could have been spent in the earlier chapters outlining the first three ages, and what clearly separates them, but the point stands that we have had very few technological shifts that have the capacity to dramatically shift the course of human history and development. This is a great book for looking back on where we've been and equipping the reader with the information necessary to form their own ideas about where we might be going next.

The author does a poor job from both journalism and science perspectives. In fact, the second half of the book seems to be a bunch of filler, concerning other topics about the future and how 'great' our civilization has been and will be, rather than keeping to topic. Fine, so the author is an optimist. An optimist paying close attention to page count rather than the demands of the topic. The first half of the book is hardly better. Instead of an analysis, the author asks dozens (maybe hundreds) of rhetorical questions, and concludes that your answers to the basic ones establish what you expect / believe will happen with AI and robotics. These are questions concerning whether you believe the soul or consciousness are unique to humans or can accept that mathematical calculations are all that is fundamentally involved. However, the book becomes a real let down when it regurgitates these answers to tell you what you think. Doh. Ask yourself if you want to buy a book that tells you more about yourself than the topic. The book has essentially no references, which reflects the fact that it is just a long essay. A cop out. And a waste of time.

I was especially impressed with Byron Reese's analytical comparison of the human brain to current and projected AI computers. He really does a very thoughtful presentation of the differences between human traits of caring, sensitivity, love and planning for the best possible future world for humanity. IMHO, too many AI books paint an "end of humanity" perspective as Artificial General Intelligence takes over the World. As a footnote, a friend and I just finished teaching a course on AI for our local Osher Lifelong Learning organization.

This a fast-paced read. There's a lot to unpack and wrap your mind around when considering, imagining, and planning for a dramatically different future with ubiquitous AI, automation, prediction, AGI, the future of work and jobs and what that might mean for our identity and purpose. Reese brings fresh insights to all the big questions and a dozen others. His optimism about humanity is unusual and delightful without glossing over the serious, deep thinking on "what could possibly go wrong". I would love to live in the world that he believes we are building and appreciate his framing so each of us can bring considered thinking to how we deploy and integrate these technologies in our lives.
